Childhood Passion For Fitness

My passion for fitness began in my early years as a young athlete participating in every kind of sport available to me from fastpitch and soccer to riding horses.

I still ride horses a few times a week and try to take a Dressage lesson or two throughout the month. (Dressage is more commonly referred to as training for horse and rider).  I keep strong and lean with Pilates and supplement my workouts with running.

Licensed Massage Practioner to Certified STOTT Pilates Instructor

Before I became a Pilates Instructor, I was a Licensed Massage Therapist for large animals.  I graduated from the Western Montana School of Equine Massage, Hamilton, Montana. Upon returning to Washington, I discovered that I had to be licensed to work on humans in order to practice on large animals. Therefore, I enrolled at the Alexander School of Natural Therapeutics in Tacoma,WA and became a Licensed Massage Practitioner (for people) in 2004.

The following year, I opened my own massage studio in downtown Puyallup. That same year, I began taking Pilates mat classes. Pilates is a great overall body workout, and I realized how beneficial it was in my balance and stability for riding horses and everyday life.

In 2007, I became a Certified STOTT Pilates Instructor and began instructing mat classes and sessions on the Reformer. By 2008, I was teaching on Stability Chair, Cadillac, and Ladder Barrel.

Around this time, I was thrown off my horse and suffered a serious soft tissue injury to my hip. I had tremendous swelling and it took me while to rehabilitate myself while still working as a massage therapist and instructing Pilates.

Rehabiliting An Injury With Pilates

My rehabilitation consisted of a combination of one mat class per week (self taught or attending another instructor’s class), and one or two times a week on Pilates equipment, which helped me quickly regain my strength, control, stability, and flexibility.

With Pilates, you gain a greater body awareness along with overall fitness. It’s one of the biggest reasons I enjoy instructing Pilates, especially those in rehab. I remember how frustrating and painful it was to get back to my pre-injury fitness level after the hip injury.

Gentle Pilates at Richardson C. Ostenson Cancer Center

During my period of recovery, I was training to participate in a 24-hour Cancer Walk Fundraising Event called, Relay-for-Life. During this event, I met folks at the Dr. Richardson C. Ostenson Cancer Center near Good Samaritan Hospital, Puyallup, Washington.

I was approached about teaching a gentle workout for people recovering or going through cancer treatment.  I was thrilled at the opportunity to help people feel better with Pilates and began teaching a Gentle Pilates class for cancer survivors at the facility and still teach today while running my studio.  *Update: As of March 2013, I now offer the Gentle Pilates Mat Class at my studio!
