Pilates FAQ’s

What is Pilates? A physical fitness routine traditionally utilizing specialized equipment which offer resistance to controlled movements that work to increase flexibility, strengthen your core, sculpt your body, and build long, lean muscles.

How will I benefit from Pilates? With regular Pilates workouts (2-4 times a week) you will look and feel better! Your strength, flexibility, and balance will be greatly improved. You will challenge your core and develop strong abdominal muscles. You will reduce stress by focusing on particular movements related to your fitness goals and proper breathing techniques. You will find relief from common ailments such as mid and lower back pain.

Am I too old or young for Pilates? Pilates is for all ages. It can be modified to your current fitness level and goals. Various Pilates equipment, mat, and props (resistance bands, exercise balls, and Pilates circles) are part of a balanced Pilates training and fitness routine.

Do I have to be in really good shape to do Pilates? Absolutely not!  If you’re just starting out, your instructor will probably suggest you learn basics Pilates moves and breathing techniques on the mat first. Once you have mastered the basics, then you can progress to resistance moves on equipment such as the Reformer and the Arch Barrel.

How do I pronounce Pilates? It is pronounced ‘pi-lah-tees’

Will I need an appointment to do Pilates? Private and semi-private sessions on equipment are booked by appointment only. Call (253) 906-2292. Mat classes must be prepaid in advance for single and/or packaged sessions.

When will I notice results with Pilates? Pilates works well when performed 2-4 times a week. Most people begin to notice significant results after 10-15 sessions.

Should I add other exercise besides Pilates? Yes, be sure to take a break every other day or so for cardio activities such as 30 minutes of brisk walking or hiking, swimming, and bike riding.

Who is Joseph Pilates? Born in Germany, Joseph Pilates developed the Pilates exercises back in the 1920’s.

Do I need special clothing to do Pilates?  You should wear comfortable clothing so you can move freely. Most people wear yoga or sweat pants with a t-shirt. Please, no shorts. Shoes are not worn during Pilates mat or equipment sessions. Clean, low top socks are all that you need. Non-skid socks are helpful, but not required.

Is there a changing room at the studio? Inspired Movement Pilates Studio has a private bathroom with plenty of room to change. We have nooks for each client to store belongings and shoes.

What if I can’t make my prepaid Pilates session or mat class? We ask that you give us a 24-hour advance notice of missing a session or class, so that we can fill that time slot. No shows without a 24-hour notice forfeit payment for that session or class. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis.

Should I eat before I attend a session or class? No. It’s recommended that you don’t eat at least two hours prior.

Are there gift certificates available? Yes! Gift certificates are available in any amount.
